Fatehpur Sikri was Akbar's purpose-built capital, constructed in the 1570s and abandoned within roughly fifteen years, reportedly due to water shortages. What remains is an unusually intact complex of red sandstone palaces, courtyards, the Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Aam halls, and the monumental Buland Darwaza gate, one of the largest gateways in India.
Because so little has been altered since, it gives a clearer sense of Mughal court life than sites that have been continuously used and modified over the centuries.
