India Visa for Australian Citizens: 2026 Fees, Requirements, and How to Apply
Founder, Experience My India · IIT Jodhpur
Australian citizens need a visa to visit India, and for tourism the simplest is the e-Tourist Visa, applied for online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. The 30-day costs US$25, the 1-year US$40, and the 5-year the standard US$80, with no reciprocal spike; there is no visa on arrival for Australian passport holders.
Do Australian citizens need a visa for India
Yes. All ordinary Australian passport holders need a visa to enter India, and the e-Tourist Visa is the simplest option: fully online, no consulate visit. Diplomatic and official passports are not e-Visa eligible and must apply for a regular visa.
| Criteria | 30-day | 1-year | 5-year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Validity | 30 days from arrival | 365 days from grant | 5 years from grant |
| Entries | Double | Multiple | Multiple |
| Fee | US$25 (US$10 in April–June) | US$40 | US$80 standard, no reciprocal spike |
How Australia compares to other passports
India prices the 5-year e-Tourist Visa reciprocally, so what you pay follows your passport rather than your itinerary. The spread is wide, from about US$25 to US$484, and an Australian passport sits near the bottom of it, on the standard US$80 rate. A British passport, by comparison, pays more than six times what an Australian one does for the identical visa.
There is nothing to work around here and no cheaper route to hunt for. Pick the duration that matches how often you will actually travel, and pay the government the standard rate on the official portal.
Can Australian citizens get a visa on arrival in India
No. There is no visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry to India for ordinary Australian passport holders. Apply for the e-Visa online before you fly.

Flying from Australia
Australians visit India in growing numbers, with flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane via Singapore or the Gulf to Delhi and Mumbai. Many combine India with a Southeast Asia leg; peak season is October to March. When you plan with us we confirm the right visa and shape the route.
