The Old Delhi street food walk takes you through the lanes around Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in India, tasting stuffed parathas, chaat, kebabs and jalebi at stalls chosen for both flavour and visible hygiene practice. It runs on foot over a few hours with a local guide who knows the lanes and can order in Hindi on your behalf.
What this walk covers
Old Delhi's food culture is centred on the lanes around Chandni Chowk, one of India's oldest and busiest markets, laid out in the seventeenth century under Mughal rule. The walk moves on foot through a handful of these lanes, stopping at stalls known for a single dish done well rather than a broad menu: stuffed parathas at a paratha-focused lane, chaat (savoury snacks built on crisp fried dough, chutneys and yoghurt), grilled kebabs, and a finish of hot jalebi or another sweet. Pace is unhurried and portions at each stop are small by design, so you arrive hungry and leave satisfied rather than full at the first stall.
- The lanes are crowded, narrow and can be loud; comfortable closed shoes are more useful than sandals.
- Most food is vegetarian-friendly, but tell us in advance about any allergies or a Jain diet so stops can be adjusted.
- Bring cash for anything you want to buy beyond the included tastings.
- Summer afternoons are very hot; mornings or early evenings are the more comfortable time slots.
Best season and starting point
The walk runs year-round; October to March is the most comfortable weather for walking. Meeting point is confirmed on booking, typically at a landmark near Chandni Chowk metro station.
Is the food safe to eat?
We route the walk to stalls with high turnover and visible hygiene practices, which is the most reliable indicator for street food anywhere. We cannot promise a guarantee no operator honestly can, but the selection is deliberately conservative.
Can it be made vegetarian or Jain?
Much of the walk is naturally vegetarian; tell us about a Jain diet in advance so the paratha and chaat stops can be adjusted.
How much walking is involved?
A few hours at a slow, food-stop pace over a compact area, but the lanes are uneven and crowded, so mobility should be reasonably good.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, with milder spice requested; the crowds and noise are the bigger consideration than the food itself.
Can we combine it with an Old Delhi heritage walk?
Yes, ask us to pair it with our Old Delhi heritage walk covering Jama Masjid and the surrounding streets.

5/54 days agoOur guide's local contacts opened doors we did not know existed — a block-printing workshop, a temple kitchen at prasad time. The itinerary on paper was good; the day itself was far better.

5/52 weeks agoSunrise start was worth the alarm. We were through the gates before the crowds and had almost twenty minutes with the place nearly to ourselves. The driver was waiting exactly where he said he would be.

4/51 month agoVery good day out. Guide was knowledgeable and the driver excellent. The only reason it is not five stars is that the lunch break felt too long when we would rather have seen one more site.

3/51 month agoMixed feelings. The sites were spectacular and the driver excellent, but our guide's English was harder to follow than we expected and we missed some of the detail. The office apologised quickly when we mentioned it.
